Third Edition

Unless the muddy water becomes quickly purified, I cannot find the way of setting in the central pillar.

If only the central pillar is quickly set in, all shall become settled firmly and forever.

Inoue/Eynon

Unless the muddy water is quickly purified, there is no way of installing the central pillar.

Only if the pillar is promptly installed, will peace definitely reign for all time.

Ofudesaki chushaku

3:66, 67 Unless everyone quickly purifies their minds, the core of the faith, the Kanrodai cannot be built and the person who will become the core of the path will not be able to live at Jiba.

*Note: This is a verse hastening the identification of the Jiba, the spot to place the Kanrodai and God’s wish to have the first Shinbashira, who is to lead the path to live at Jiba. (Refer to notes for 3:8 and 9)

Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2008)

From Michi no Dai: Foundation of the Path 33:44

III:66

Greed, briefly put, is the use of mind that is self-centered. The self-centered use of mind is what causes water to become muddy. Unless the muddy water is purified, the “central pillar,” or the Kanrodai, cannot be put in. It remains impossible to set up the Kanrodai. Nor can the Shinbashira be welcomed into the Residence.

III:67

God desires to set up the Kanrodai and welcome the Shinbashira quickly. When both take place, the world will settle in a way that will be sustainable forever. That is to say, the world will settle into the way it ought to be.
