God is impatiently waiting for the performers of the Service to assemble and perform the Joyous Service. What is the Joyous Service? It is the Kagura Service, says the verse. This verse makes it clear that what is called the Joyous Service is the same as the Kagura Service, which is referred to in Part I in such phrases as “do the Kagura Service and the Teodori” (I:14).
Although the Japanese term “kagura” is sometimes written by using two Chinese characters that mean “God’s delight,” this term is believed to be a corruption of “kamu-kura,” which means “God’s seat.” This etymology would indicate that the Kagura Service is to be performed at the seat of God, which is to say that it is to be performed where God is. On the other hand, writing this term with the characters meaning “God’s delight” might indicate that the Kagura Service is something that brings delight to God and makes God spirited. These two ways of interpreting the term are not at all mutually contradictory. The verse here says that the Kagura Service is the Joyous Service, which is to be performed spiritedly and joyously. We speak of four terms referring to the Service, which appear in the Ofudesaki in this order: the “Kagura Service,” the “Joyous Service,” the “Salvation Service,” and the “Service of the Kanrodai.” The “Joyous Service” is the most frequently used of the four in this Scripture.
