Ofudesaki 03:081–5 is a set of verses from the Ofudesaki. The English translation below is the sixth edition translation.

Content

From now on, I shall compare kore kara wa Kami no kokoro tokami taru no これからハ 神の心と 上たるの
the minds of those in high places with the mind of God. kokoro to kokoro no hiki-awase suru 心と心の ひきやハせする
Do not take this talk lightly. kono hanashi chotto no koto ya to omou na yo このはなし 一寸の事やと をもうなよ
God truly cannot bear to look on. Kami ga shinjitsu mikanetaru yue 神がしんぢつ みかねたるゆへ
Know that the strength of God will be pitted against kore kara wa Kami no chikara tokami taru no これからハ 神のちからと 上たるの
the strength of those in high places from now on. chikara kurabe osuru to omoe yo ちからくらべを するとをもへよ
Have your strongest come against Me. ika hodo no gōteki araba dashite miyo いかほどの ごふてきあらば だしてみよ

Third Edition

From now on I will bring together the mind of God and that of the upper people.

Never take this talk to be a mere trifle! This is because God could not bear to remain as a mere spectator. Expect that from now on I, God, will compare My might with that of the upper people!

However strong a man there may be, let him come against Me! I Myself have twice as much strength as he.

I, the true God, am coming to the fore, and will do any and every arrangement. Understand it well!

From now on, the mind of God will be brought to confront the minds of the authorities.

You should do not consider this confrontation as insignificant. I, God, shall undertake it, for I cannot bear the present world.

Know that henceforth I shall show you a contest of strength between the power of God and that of the authorities.

If there are powerful opponents, present them to Me. I, God, shall prevail over them with twice their strength.

Since I, the true and real God, have come forth into the world, be convinced that I shall help in all preparations.

Ofudesaki chushaku

3:81–85 *Note: Although Oyagami is hastening for the path of single-hearted salvation to spread, the local authorities subjected the path to persecution and nearby followers were concerned of this. Unable to stand by and watch this lack of initiative on their part, Oyagami was about to prepare to have those in high places realize God’s true intention since the people in high places truly misunderstood the truth of the path. Also, these verses are encouraging followers to put their minds at ease, for no matter how Shinto and Buddhist priests strongly criticize and oppose the path of single-hearted salvation with their human wisdom and power, Oyagami would thaw and dispel such opposition with warm parental love and as long as God was revealed into the open, the path of single-hearted salvation would advance through every conceivable form of divine protection.

八一―八五、註 このたすけ一条の道を早く弘めようと、親神様は急き込んでおられるけれども、当時の地方官憲がこの道に対する無理解から種々圧迫を加え、又それをそばの人々は気にして、とかく進取の気象に乏しかったのを、親神は見兼ねて、上の人々の無理解は真実にこの道の真髄を知らないがためであるから、今後上の方にも親神の真意を悟らせるように段取りする。又、人間の知恵や力でどんなに強く弁難し反対する神職や僧侶などがあっても、親神の方にはその反対を氷解せしめて余りある温かい親心があるのであるから、この真実の親神が表へ現れている以上、どのような守護もするにより、安心してたすけ一条の道に進め、と励まされたのである。

III:81

Part III and Part IV contain many instances of the term “high places,” which is a translation of the Japanese word “kami,” a word that even today is sometimes used with the meaning of the government or authorities although it sounds old-fashioned.

The mind or intention of God the Parent and the “minds of those in high places” are to be compared. The original word for “compare” in this verse is “hikiyawase,” which can mean both to “bring together,” as in bringing people together and introducing them to each other, and to “compare,” as in the following Ofudesaki verse: “When you come, compare your disorder with this place. If the condition is the same, quickly begin the sweeping” (VIII:82). In verse III:81, the Japanese verb might seem to include both meanings—in which case the verse would mean that God’s intention and the minds of those in high places are to be brought together and compared. However, it seems to me that the verb probably should be understood in the sense of “compare,” as in the phrase “compare your disorder with this place.”

Verse 83 below says that “the strength of God will be pitted against the strength of those in high places.” This seems to confirm that God will first compare God’s mind with the minds of those in high places. Ultimately, God will bring the two together as one, yet here verse 81 refers to comparing the divine intention and the minds of those in high places.

III:82

One needs to understand that it is for no small reason that God is giving “this talk.” The situation is so serious that God can no longer bear to look on. The minds of those in high places are so far removed from God’s intention and so dictatorial, tyrannical, and selfish that God can no longer keep silent.

III:83

God the Parent’s strength and that of those in high places are to be pitted against each other. This verse sounds extremely reassuring; this sort of wording is only possible because it comes from God, who is the Parent of all humankind. Incidentally, Anecdotes of Oyasama contains a number of stories featuring a test of strength. The verse here says that God will pit the strength of God against that of the authorities because, at the time when these verses were written, the government was seen as having absolute authority.

III:84

The verse is challenging the strongest and toughest to come against God. No matter how strong, tough, or formidable the adversary may be, God will exert twice the strength of the person. God will never be defeated.

III:85

The phrase “God in Truth” refers to God the Parent. The meaning of the verse is that, now that God of Origin, God in Truth, will be coming to the fore, one would be well advised to be aware that all plans, preparations, and arrangements will be undertaken.
