Ofudesaki 03:086–91 is a set of verses from the Ofudesaki. The English translation below is the sixth edition translation.

Content

Until now, those of Kara have done as they pleased with Nihon. ima made wa kara ga nihon o mama ni shita いまゝでわ からがにほんを まゝにした
What can be done about the regret of God? Kami no zannen nanto shiyo nara 神のざんねん なんとしよやら   
Hereafter, Nihon will do as it pleases with those of Kara. kono saki wa nihon ga kara o mama ni suru このさきハ にほんがからを まゝにする
Be aware of it, all of you. mina ichiretsu shochi shite iyo みな一れつハ しよちしていよ
Root and branches of the same tree: onaji ki no nē to eda to nokoto nara ba をなじきの ねへとゑだとの 事ならバ
branches will break, yet the root will prosper. eda wa oreru ne wa sakai deru ゑたハをれくる ねハさかいでる
Until now, those of Kara were said to be great, ima made wa kara wa erai to yūtare do いまゝでわ からハゑらいと ゆうたれど
but from now on they will only be broken. kore kara saki wa oreru bakari ya これからさきハ をれるはかりや
Look at Nihon! It is thought to be tiny, nihon miyo chiisai yō ni omotaredo にほんみよ ちいさいよふに をもたれど
but when the root appears, you will be overwhelmed with amazement. ne ga arawareba osore iru zo ya ねがあらハれば をそれいるぞや
This power cannot be thought of as being human strength. kono chikara ningen waza to omowaren このちから にんけんハさと をもハれん
It is the power of God which nothing can match. Kami no chikara ya kore wa kanawan 神のちからや これハかなわん

Third Edition

Until now the people of the region where My teachings shall spread later have managed as they please the people of the region where My teachings spread early. The regret of God was so severe that I could not find any way to clear it away.

Henceforth the people of the region where My teachings spread early will lead the people of the region where My teachings shall spread later. All of you, be aware and expect it!

They are the root and branches of the same tree. Branches may be broken, yet the root will grow prosperous.

Until now the people of the region where My teachings shall spread later have been said to be great; henceforth they shall only be broken.

Look at the region where My teachings spread early! Formerly it was said to be tiny. But when the might of the root appears, every one shall become overwhelmed with amazement.

This power cannot be taken to be the work of a man. It is the might of God, which no one can match.

Until now, the uninitiated have freely governed the initiated. What should be done about God's disappointment?

Henceforth, the initiated will freely govern the uninitiated. Let everyone, everywhere, beware!

Since you are roots and branches of the same tree, even if the branches may break, the roots will still prosper.

Hitherto, the uninitiated have been held in high esteem. But hereafter, they must yield to Me completely.

Look at the land of the initiated, it is considered small. But when the roots are revealed, everyone will be filled with awe.

This power should not be thought of as being human. Since it is the power of God, you cannot rival it.

3:86 Until now, I am truly frustrated at how human thinking has run rampant, allowing some to obstruct My teachings as they please.

*Note:Nihon” refers to the place where Oyagami’s teachings are first taught, consequently the state where Oyagami’s true intention becomes clear. “Kara” refers to places where Oyagami’s teachings will go and spread to next, consequently, the condition describing Oyagami’s teachings are still not known. (Refer to note for 2:47)

3:87 All of you, be aware beforehand that from now on, I shall freely and unlimitedly direct My single-hearted parental love for the sake of your salvation, telling My true intention to you and to places that do not know My teachings. 3:88 To compare the root and branches of the same tree, branches will only break and the root will only grow and prosper.

*Note: During one of Oyasama’s fasts, when someone expressed concern if it was okay for Her to fast as much as She did, She answered, with words similar to the following message: “The mind is the root. The body shall never wither if only the mind is connected to Oyagami.”

3:89 Until now, people have been called great simply from the human thinking that considered the knowledge and skills of these people to be superior, even though they have not heard the teachings of Oyagami. Yet from now on, such people will abandon human thinking and follow Oyagami’s true intention once they awaken to it.

*Note: “will only be broken” (oreru bakari ya) refers to the process of breaking the self-centeredness of human thinking and become attached to Oyagami’s true intention.

3:90 Until now, you may have taken this place where I began My teachings lightly. Yet My true intention has been revealed into the open, and if the minds of people are completely purified and replace with the mind of single-hearted salvation, a great number of people will come longing and yearning for this place.

3:91 Because these absolute workings of Mine that cannot be considered human power but are manifestations of My divine power, the minds of a great number of people will cannot help but be impressed by them.

3:86–91 *general summary: Considering the circumstances of the world when these verses were written in 1874, Oyagami is severely urging self-reflection on the part of human beings that are now fighting and hurting one another because they are promoting their own self-interest upon having forgotten the truth behind human creation that everyone in the world must respect and help one another as brothers and sisters. Oyagami is prompting people to have faith that allows all of humanity to advance on the path of single-hearted salvation and head toward the harmonious Joyous Life. (Refer to note for 2:40)

八六、今までは人間思案がはびこって、親神の教のぐ通をほしいままに妨げてきたが、これは、親神の実にもどかしく思うて来たところである。

註 にほんは、親神様の教の先ず説かれる所、従って、親神様の真意の明らかにされたる意。からは、次に親神様の教の行き渡る所、従って、未だ親神様の教を知らない意。

八七、今後は親神の真意を説き聞かせて、今まで親神の教を知らなかった所へも、自由自在にたすけ一条の親心を行きわたらせるようにするから、皆も者はこれを予め心得ているようにせよ。

八八、同じ木の根と枝とであってみれば、枝葉折れてくるばかり、根は栄え出る一方である。

 教祖が断食をなさった時に、そんなに断食されても大丈夫でしょうか。と、御心配申し上げた人に、

『根は心や。心さえ親神様に通じていたら決して枯れないのや』という意味の事をお諭しされた事がある。

八九、今までは親神の教を聞いていなくでも、ただ人間思案で知恵や技術だけの優れた者を偉いと言うていたが、今後はそのうな者も、人間思案を捨てて、親神の真意を悟ってつき順うて来る。

九〇、今までは、親神の教の説き始められる所を軽く思い侮っていたであろうが、親神の真意が表へ現れて、人々の心がたすけ一条に澄み切って来たならば、何人も皆懐かしく思い慕わずにおれぬようになる。

註 をれるとは、人間思案の我がを折って、親神の真意に懐いて来るの意。

九一、この絶大な働きは人間の力でする事は思えない、皆親神の力の現れであるから、何人も皆心から感心せずにおられなくなる。

八六―九一、総註 以上いずれも、本歌御執筆当時即ち明治七年頃の世情を憂え、親神様のこの世人間創造の真実である一列兄弟、互い立て合い扶け合いを忘れて、利己主義にはじり互に相争い、相傷つけんとしていた人々に、激しく反省を促し、たすけ一条の道に進み、一列かい和の陽気ぐらしに向かうよう、人々の信仰を鼓舞せられたものである。(第二号四〇註参照)

III:86–7

As we saw in Part II, Kara refers to those who do not understand or accord with the intention of God the Parent. Nihon refers to those who understand and accord with God the Parent’s intention. Verse 86 says that those who do not understand or accord with God’s intention have been doing as they please with those who do. The verse goes on to say, “What can be done about the regret of God?”—the word “regret” suggesting a sense of impatience. There is a certain sense of sadness here.

From now on, however, those who understand God’s intention will do as they please with those who do not understand it. This does not mean that Nihon will deal arbitrarily with Kara but that Nihon will eclipse, outshine, or overwhelm Kara. Verse 87 says to be well aware of this. The next verse will introduce a new metaphor, that of the root and branches, which correspond to Nihon and Kara respectively.

III:88

If the root of a tree is neglected, this tree’s branches will eventually wither and break. It is not as if branches break for no reason; rather, a lack of attention to the root is what causes problems in the branches. The verse goes on to say that the root can continue to thrive even if the branches break.

III:89

Kara is likened to branches. Those who fail to understand the divine intention have claimed to be superior and stronger. However, because they have been inattentive to and have neglected the “root,” they will, from now on, “only be broken,” which is to say that they will find themselves in a situation where they can only yield and surrender. Those of Kara will surrender.

III:90

Although Nihon is regarded as small, people will be awed and overwhelmed once the workings and strength of the root are shown. Nihon, which at present seems tiny, will prove awe-inspiring and overwhelm others.

III:91

The workings and power of the root cannot possibly be considered to be human. They are manifestations of God the Parent’s strength and can, therefore, never be rivaled. This contrast between God and those in high places is discussed by using the metaphor of Nihon and Kara and that of the root and branches.
