2:31 Kara and Nihon: These terms are the components of a geographical metaphor that expresses the distance between the intention of God the Parent and a person’s understanding of it. Consequently, these terms do not refer to any actual regions or to peoples inhabiting them.
- Nihon, deriving from a word that indicates the region around the Jiba, refers to the place settled by those whose use of mind and way of living are near the intention of God the Parent, who is one in truth with the Jiba.
- Kara, on the other hand, refers to the places inhabited by those whose use of mind and way of living are still distant from God’s intention.
- Tenjiku (which first appears in verse 10:3), refers, by extension, to places inhabited by those whose use of mind and way of living are still farther away from God’s intention.

The terms “Kara” and “Nihon” appear here. Incidentally, the Ofudesaki also uses “Tenjiku” later. These terms are never meant to be understood geographically. Those who understand God the Parent’s intention are referred to as “Nihon,” and those who do not as “Kara.” It is very difficult to translate these terms. For example, translating them as “Japan” and “China” would be highly problematic. In fact, when I was involved in revising the English translation of the Ofudesaki, I had a very hard time dealing with this issue. Indeed, God is aware of the difficulty we have and says, “You may not understand whatever I tell you.”
