Divine Model

Divine Model is the standard gloss of Hinagata ひながた. In Tenrikyo literature, the term Hinagata in most cases refers to Oyasama’s life between lunar 10/26/1838 (when she became the Shrine of Tsukihi) and February 18, 1887 (lunar 1/26/1887) when she withdrew from physical life. Calls for followers to follow the Divine Model of Oyasama frequently appear in Tenrikyo literature and sermons. The current Shinbashira Zenji Nakayama once noted that following the Divine Model of Oyasama amounted to being the “basis or starting point” of faith.[1]

Another take on following the Divine Model has been described as follows:

“To follow the Divine Model does not mean to imitate the way Oyasama lived, that is, not to repeat the past. As a model way of living, the Divine Model should be referred to help one take Oyasama’s intention into consideration in creating one’s own way of living.”[2]

Analysis of term

“Hinagata” is a term that can be translated into “form,” “model,” “pattern,” “shape,” “skeleton,” and “template.”[3]

Other meanings in Tenrikyo

There are some contexts in which the term “Hinagata” is used to either refer to the “models” of the Kanrodai built by Izo Iburi in 1873 (mentioned in Ofudesaki 9:45) and thereafter or to the “models” of husband and wife mentioned in the Tenrikyo Story of Creation.[4]

Parent of the Divine Model

“Parent of the Divine Model” (Hinagata no Oya ひながたの親) is one of the three roles of Oyasama as designated by the second Shinbashira Shozen Nakayama.[citation needed] A Glossary of Tenrikyo Terms notes:

“The term ‘Parent of the Divine Model’ refers to [Oyasama’s] role of demonstrating an exemplary model in order to teach and guide human beings.”[5]
