Commentary
Ofudesaki chushaku
4:51 Although it is called fertilizer, it is not the bran or the soil or the ashes that makes it effective. The sincerity of a pure heart that leans on Me, Oyagami, is what reaches Me and allows these blessings to appear. |

Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2008)
From Michi no dai: Foundation of the Path 34:49–50
The blessing of good crops can be received through the Service of Fertilizer and the Sazuke of Fertilizer, yet what exactly is it that is effective? It is not the rice bran, ash, or soil offered on the altar, referring to the physical ingredients of the Sazuke of Fertilizer. Rather, it is the mind’s sincerity that is effective. The sincerity of the mind will be effective for helping people be blessed with good crops.
It is said that the cost of buying fertilizer was a heavy burden on farmers back in the days when the Ofudesaki was written. This was an extremely important issue, about which farming families could not help being concerned. Song One starts by saying: “At New Year, the Sazuke of fertilizer: How remarkable it is!” This is presumably because fertilizer was a major matter of concern to farmers.
