Third Edition

What do you think this present way is? Even though it is indeed a way which you cannot take to be trustworthy,

In the near future, a broad way is coming into sight. While you are saying that it is over there, it is already before you.

Inoue/Eynon

What kind of path do you think this present one is? It is a path that seems difficult to understand.

But a broad path lies ahead within sight. You will soon arrive there before you realize it.

Ofudesaki chushaku

4:1, 2 This path at present is a narrow path that may seem unreliable to the human eye. Yet up ahead I see a reliable broad path. Furthermore, it will come before your very eyes before you realize it, when you still think that it is still far ahead.

『おふでさき註釈』、p. 53

一、二、この道は、今の処細い道で人目にはたよりないように思うであろうが、行く先には確かな大道が見えてある。しかも、それそこにある、と言うているうちに、もう目の前へ現れて来た。

Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2008)

From Michi no dai: Foundation of the Path 34:38

IV:1

The verse is asking, “What do you think of this path at present?” Although it may seem rather obscure, the next verse says:

IV:2

The present path is described in verse 1 as “unclear”–which in a sense may imply “unreliable.” Yet a broad path is already seen ahead according to verse 2, the phrase “broad path” referring to a wide path used by many people. The verse says, “You are saying that [the broad path] is over there, but it is already before you.” The broad path is already very close; this path is in sight. It is opening up before people.
