From Michi no Dai: Foundation of the Path 33:59
This is one of those places where I find the wording to be rather strong. Trees that God desires to use as Yoboku will be tended in various ways, but those that will not be used will be allowed to “fall as they are.” The latter will not be tended; instead, God will let them fall down as they are. This may sound rather frightening. Yet, if we find ourselves being tended by God, that is evidence that God has high expectations of us as Yoboku. If we were not going to be used, we would be allowed to fall, rather than being tended.
