Ofudesaki chushaku

3:50 Although I have assembled many trees of all types, those that are bent or crooked will not make the cut.

*Note: The phrase “bent or crooked” is a metaphor for a person whose mind is or twisted or noncompliant.

Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2008)

From Michi no Dai: Foundation of the Path 33:41

Although many and varied trees have been gathered, ones that are bent or crooked—“crooked” meaning “bent sharply” or “twisted” and being intended to indicate a much greater degree of unsuitability than “bent”—are not useful at all. Yet even people who might be likened to such trees can become useful if they listen to God’s teachings and work to replace their minds.
