Alternate English translations
Third Edition
It is a mistake that you are taking it simply as a baby's crying at night. It is not a baby crying; it is the persuasion of God.
Inoue/Eynon
You are mistaken if you think it is a baby crying at night. It is not a baby crying, but God’s persuasion.
Commentary
Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2008)
From Michi no Dai: Foundation of the Path 33:34–5
This verse speaks of a child crying hard at night and says that it would be gravely mistaken to regard the child’s crying as something troublesome. What is happening is not a child crying; it is God teaching the parents. Incidentally, the original says, “Ko ga nakude na,” yet we supply “i” at the end of this phrase so that it reads, “Ko ga nakude nai.”
