From Michi no Dai: Foundation of the Path 33:31
We might wonder where we can find the sand and filter that can help purify the mind. The verse says that our heart and mouth are the sand and filter. The heart is an instrument for pondering or awakening, and the mouth an instrument for communicating or conveying. The mouth may also indicate giving and receiving instruction—which is to say, conveying God’s intention to others and listening to the divine intention as conveyed through someone else’s mouth. The mind can thus be purified by the sand and filter.
