From Michi no dai: Foundation of the Path 35:55
The term “incantations” here is a translation of the word “jutsu” (術), which may translate as “art,” “technique,” and “magic.” One should not imagine that “magical arts” are great or miraculously effective. “The mind’s sincerity is the true art,” says the verse. This path teaches that what is effective is not traditional magical arts and incantations but the sincerity of the mind. People can receive God’s workings through their minds’ sincerity. The phrase “true art” is a translation of the Japanese term “shinjitsu,” which I think means both “true sincerity” (shinjitsu 真実) and “true art” (shin no jutsu 真の術). At any rate, the verse clearly shows the contrast between traditional magical arts and incantations on the one hand and this path’s salvation work on the other. Verse 40 earlier included the phrase “if only your sincerity is accepted by God.” The Scripture emphasizes true sincerity. What this path teaches is that people can receive God’s workings by having their sincerity accepted. This is one of the ways in which the path is clearly differentiated from traditional “formulas of worship [and] exorcism.” People may pay practitioners to perform formulas of worship and exorcism for them. In this path, however, one can receive salvation by having one’s sincerity of mind accepted.
