Commentary by Yoshitaro Ueda (2009)

From Michi no dai: Foundation of the Path 35:52–3

The phrase “magical rites” refers to incantations and invocations performed in, for example, esoteric religious traditions. These rites, which might be seen as a type of prayer, came into being in the context of the various teachings that God offered for the purpose of “weeding and fertilizing.” Ofudesaki chushaku paraphrases this verse as follows: “Although various magical rites have been used, there will no longer be such things from now on.” Those magical rites and arts, which have until now been used as part of a path of “weeding and fertilizing,” will be ineffective from now on. They will be devoid of efficacy and become useless.
