Yutatsu

Yutatsu 諭達 (English: “Instruction”) refer to special instructions relating to faith and its implementation that the Shinbashira issues to the entire Tenrikyo congregation at seasonal periods. Regarding these Instructions, Article 18 of the The Constitution of Tenrikyo reads:

“The Shinbashira shall, in accordance with the joint report signed by the Director-in-Chief of Religious Affairs and Director-in-Chief of Administrative Affairs, promulgate an Instruction.”

History

The first Yutatsu was issued in December 1903. They began to be numbered after Tenrikyo’s attainment of independence in 1908 as the last of the so-called 13 Shinto sects (kyoha Shinto).

Many pre–World War II Instructions reflect the historical circumstances Tenrikyo found itself in whereas most postwar Instructions contain the Shinbashira’s thoughts on how followers should apply themselves during the three years, one thousand days leading to an upcoming Anniversary of Oyasama.
