The term "kohon" happens to label this biography as a "manuscript edition." The explanation for this is that "more detailed research and studies remain to be made on the numerals, notes, words, and phrases"<ref name="LO"/> that appear in it. This suggests that there is a potential for further revisions to be made to the text in the future when significant discoveries regarding the life and times of Tenrikyo's founder ever come to light.
Kohon Tenrikyo Oyasama Den was first published in 1956 (the year of the 70th Anniversary of Oyasama) and revised in 1981 by Church Headquarters. It was finally published after many aborted attempts to compile a biography on Miki Nakayama, the first which began from the 10th Anniversary of Oyasama 60 years earlier. Kohon Tenrikyo Oyasama Den was compiled largely based on the Ofudesaki and other preserved historical documents that include Oyasama-gyoden (The Biography of Oyasama), an early work written by Shinnosuke Nakayama, the first Shinbashira.
The preface explicitly reveals that The Life of Oyasama was compiled for the purpose to provide "the standard for all people of the world to appreciate and practice the Divine Model."<ref name="LO"/> The Divine Model refers to the life of Miki Nakayama from when she is said to have become the Shrine of Tsukihi or the mouthpiece of God the Parent on 10/26/1838 (lunar calendar), until her "withdrawal from physical life" on 1/26/1887 (lunar) at the age of 90, which totals to approximately 50 years. The Life of Oyasama also describes, in Chapter Two, the life of Miki Nakayama before she became the Shrine of Tsukihi.
