52. Learn the Koto[1] In 1877, Oyasama told Tomegiku Tsuji, who was then eight years old:
But her father, Chusaku, ignored the instruction, saying, "As we are farmers, she does not need to learn to play the koto." After several days, Chusaku developed a large boil on his right arm. He reflected on his condition and realized that he should have his daughter learn to play the koto. So he made up his mind and went to Koriyama to buy a koto. While he was talking with the shopkeeper at the music shop, the boil on his right arm burst and the pain stopped completely. He realized that this indeed had been God's intention. Carrying a big koto on his shoulder with the arm which had hurt until shortly before, he went home in high spirits.

五二 琴を習いや 明治十年のこと。教祖が、当時八才の辻とめぎくに、
と、仰せになったが、父の忠作は、「我々の家は百姓であるし、そんな、琴なんか習わせても。」 と言って、そのままにして、日を過ごしていた。 すると、忠作の右腕に、大きな腫物が出来た。それで、この身上から、「娘に琴の稽古をさせねばならぬ。」 と気付き、決心して、郡山の 町へ琴を買いに行った。 そうして、琴屋で、話しているうちに、その腫物が潰れて、痛みもすっきり治まった。それで、「いよいよこれは、神様の思わくやったのや。」 と、心も勇んで、大きな琴を、今先まで痛んでいた手で肩にかついで、帰路についた、という。
